About the museum
The first museum collection in Nowy Targ was founded even before the First World War in the building of the local gymnasium, on the initiative of Prof. Kazimierz Baran. The museum in its present form was created on the initiative of activists of the Komisja Opieki nad Zabytkami (Commission for the Care of Monuments) at the Gorce branch of the PTTK (Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society), under Czesław Pajerski, a long-serving voluntary curator whose name the institution bears to this day. An official application for its establishment was submitted in 1959, and the first exhibition opened in November 1966.
The museum changed its premises several times: first it was at ul. Szaflarska 1, from 1972 in buildings at ul. Sobieskiego 2 and Rynek 7, and since 1994 it has been in the town hall at Rynek 1. From 1 January 2010 the collections and the running of the museum were taken over by the Miejski Ośrodek Kultury w Nowym Targu (Municipal Culture Centre in Nowy Targ). Under the museum’s patronage, regional rooms were also set up, including in Białka Tatrzańska, Chochołów and Chyżne.
The most valuable collections include the collection of guild crafts of Nowy Targ, paintings by Michał Rekucki, ceramics by Jan Reczkowski and sculptures by Edward Sutor. The permanent exhibition shows Podhale pottery, furriery, weaving, cooperage and woodcarving, shoemaking, hat-making, joinery and blacksmithing, as well as an exhibition of memorabilia of John Paul II.
