About the museum

The museum branch of the Polskie Towarzystwo Turystyczno-Krajoznawcze (Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society, PTTK) was established on 11 May 1980 in a wooden building right next to the PTTK hostel on Turbacz, below the summit in the Gorce. Its present name, Gorczański Ośrodek Historii Turystyki Górskiej na Turbaczu (Gorce Centre for the History of Mountain Tourism on Turbacz), was given by a resolution of 6 June 2016 of the Mountain Tourism Commission of the PTTK Main Board.

Today the collections have been moved to a separate room in the Władysław Orkan hostel (schronisko im. Władysława Orkana) and are shown to visitors as a small exhibition. The exhibits include photographs and documents concerning more than forty no-longer-existing hostels in the Carpathians, a biographical exhibition devoted to the writer Władysław Orkan, and an exhibition on partisan fighting in these areas during the Second World War, as well as models of hostels and souvenirs relating to the history of the hostel on Turbacz.
