About the museum
The museum is housed in the oldest surviving church in Legnickie Pole, the former Benedictine Church of the Holy Trinity and the Blessed Virgin Mary, dating from the second half of the 14th century. According to tradition, the church was built on the spot where the body of Duke Henry II the Pious, who fell in the Battle of Legnica in 1241, was found. Until 1945 it was a Protestant church with a cemetery enclosed by a wall; after the war the building stood empty and fell into ruin.
In 1960 the church was renovated and adapted for museum purposes. The Museum of the Battle of Legnica was officially opened on 4 June 1961; the concept for the first permanent exhibition was prepared by Józef Piątek of the Silesian Museum in Wrocław. In 1972 the institution became a branch of the Copper Museum in Legnica.
From the very beginning, the museum has promoted knowledge of the events of 1241 and kept alive the memory of the battle and of the fallen duke. The current permanent exhibition is entitled “Meeting of Two Worlds. Remembering the Battle of Legnica 1241”.
