About the museum

The Muzeum Bolesława Prusa (Bolesław Prus Museum) is the only institution in Poland devoted to this writer, whose real name was Aleksander Głowacki. It was established around 1961 on the initiative of Prof. Feliks Araszkiewicz of the Catholic University of Lublin and Stefan Butryn, curator of the Muzeum Stefana Żeromskiego in Nałęczów. Initially it occupied rooms in the Małachowski Palace.

In December 2017 the museum moved to the Ochronka im. Adama Żeromskiego (Adam Żeromski Shelter), a building in the Zakopane style designed by Jan Koszczyc-Witkiewicz. The history of the building is linked with Prus: he wrote a text for the publication “Na nową szkołę” (“For a New School”), the proceeds from which were used to complete the construction.

The collections include replicas and memorabilia connected with the writer, among them Prus’s Warsaw study, recreated on the basis of photographs, with a copy of his desk, a nineteenth-century typewriter, a marble writing set, his surviving spectacles and a commemorative plaque with his initials. In the library, editions of his works in foreign languages are displayed, and in a display case there are original letters and photographs.
