About the museum

The Museum of the Vistula Region (Muzeum Nadwiślańskie) in Kazimierz Dolny was founded in 1963. Its main seat is at Rynek 19, and its branches operate in the town’s historic buildings and the surrounding area: in the Celejów Tenement (Kamienica Celejowska), the House of the Kuncewicz Family (Dom Kuncewiczów), the Natural History Museum, the Department of History and Culture of the Region, and in the open-air archaeological site of the Museum of the Ancient Slavs (Muzeum Dawnych Słowian) in Żmijowiska near Wilków. Until 2017 the Czartoryski Museum in Puławy was also part of the museum; the town of Puławy then took it over.

The collections number more than 20 thousand objects and cover archaeological, painting, natural history and goldsmiths’ collections. The Museum of Goldsmiths’ Art (Muzeum Sztuki Złotniczej), opened in 1979 in the historic cellars of the main building, holds a special place. It is the only institution of its kind in Poland and presents more than a thousand years of the history of Polish goldsmiths’ art. The core of the collection, some 1,900 objects, is a gift from collector Jędrzej Jaworski, who in 1979 handed over to the museum 550 pieces of old silverware, mostly Polish. It is supplemented by the museum’s own purchases and deposits from other museums.

The Temporary Exhibition Gallery (Galeria Wystaw Czasowych) is located on the upper floor of the main building.
