About the museum
The Muzeum Stefana Żeromskiego was established on the initiative of Oktawia Żeromska, who bequeathed the writer’s summer studio, together with the garden and the mausoleum, to the Polish nation for use as a museum. The museum opened on 17 June 1928.
The seat, known as the Chata (Cottage), is a summer studio built in 1905 to a design by Jan Koszczyc-Witkiewicz, in the Zakopane style with Art Nouveau elements, made of pine logs. The Chata was the writer’s workplace, a place of meetings with friends and his first home of his own. The interior holds authentic furniture, paintings and souvenirs of Żeromski and his son Adam, and the walls are decorated with portraits and drawings, among them works by Witkacy.
In the lower part of the garden stands a mausoleum with the coffin of Adam Żeromski. The museum is now a branch of the National Museum in Lublin (Literary Museum), and according to the information on its website it remains closed until further notice.
