About the museum
The Muzeum Borów Tucholskich (Museum of the Tuchola Forests) was opened to visitors on 27 September 1980 as a branch of the Regional Museum in Bydgoszcz. The institution occupies a brick building from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, located at the junction of ul. Podgórna and ul. Murowa, whose architecture recalls former granaries. In the past it had been used for storing grain, bottling beer, making ice cream and buying herbs; the renovation and conversion took place from 1976 to 1980.
From 1992 to 2001 the museum was managed by the Tuchola Landscape Park, and from 2001 to 2024 by the Tuchola County Starostwo (County Office), which gradually modernised the building. Since 1 March 2024 the museum has been run by the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Centre of Heritage in Toruń, a cultural institution of the regional government. In its first year the museum was visited by 2,751 people, and in recent years the number of visitors reached nearly 9,000 a year.
Before the renovation, the permanent exhibitions occupied three floors of the building: a room devoted to the history of the town, a reconstructed Borowiak cottage, an exhibition on the flora and fauna of the Tuchola Forests, and an ethnographic display on former trades. The museum also ran museum lessons, such as making butter and washing laundry on washboards. Since 16 September 2026 the museum has been closed to visitors because of renovation, and the exhibitions have been dismantled.
