About the museum
The beginnings of museum activity in Człuchów go back to 1911, when by decision of the starost a museum room with archaeological monuments was set up. The Muzeum Regionalne (Regional Museum) opened in 1927, but during the Second World War its collections were destroyed and scattered. The present museum was established on 2 January 1976, and since 1999 it has been an independent cultural institution financed from the budget of the Człuchów Town Municipality. Since 2 May 2013 its seat has been the former branch, i.e. the castle.
The Człuchów castle was one of the largest defensive complexes of the Teutonic Order and covered about three hectares, second in size only to Malbork. It consisted of the four-winged High Castle (Zamek Wysoki) with a chapel, chapter house, dormitory and refectory, and three outer baileys surrounded by moats. Construction began after 1312 and was completed around 1365. After a fire in 1793 the residents were given permission to dismantle the castle, and they rebuilt their burnt houses with its bricks. What remains of its former glory is the massive tower, 46 metres high, and an Evangelical church from the 19th century built on the foundations of the castle chapel.
The museum collects monuments connected with the past of Człuchów and the region. The permanent exhibitions present archaeological research on the castle hill, the prehistory of the Człuchów Land, its material culture, art and artistic crafts from the 15th to the 20th century, and the history of the town and the region. From the tower there is a view of the town and its surroundings.
