About the museum
The Muzeum Ziemi Chełmińskiej (Chełmno Land Museum) is seated in the town hall on the Market Square in Chełmno and in the Gunpowder Tower (Baszta Prochowa). The idea of a town museum appeared as early as 1922, but it was realised only after the war: in 1954 the Municipal People’s Council handed over the historic court room in the town hall for the needs of the Small Chełmno Museum (Małe Muzeum Chełmińskie), which had been set up by a local archaeological and numismatic society. The collections grew gradually, and from 1975 the whole town hall was devoted to museum purposes.
After seven years of renovation, during which, among other things, a Renaissance painted ceiling on the first floor was discovered, the independent Muzeum Ziemi Chełmińskiej was established on 31 December 1982. The solemn inauguration was linked to the 750th anniversary of the town’s charter, and the official opening took place on 28 December 1983.
The permanent exhibition “Dzieje Chełmna” (“History of Chełmno”) now occupies five rooms on the first floor of the town hall. It presents excavation finds from early medieval settlements, the history of Chełmno law (prawo chełmińskie) and the town’s coat of arms, the history of the Chełmno Academy, guild crafts, and the fate of the garrison in the interwar period and during the Second World War. The last room presents Ludwik Rydygier, a surgeon of world renown who carried out pioneering stomach operations in Chełmno. Paintings by Antoni Piotrowicz, a painter from Chełmno, are shown in Ordynek Room III (Sala III Ordynku) and in the town hall corridor. The museum also runs the Chełmińska Informacja Turystyczna (Chełmno Tourist Information) and organises educational classes within the “Szkółka Muzealna” (“Little Museum School”).
