About the museum
The Museum of Surgery was established in 2012 on the initiative of Dr Ryszard Wąsik, director of the Silesian Rheumatology Hospital in Ustroń, and was considered the first institution of its kind in Poland. The first part of the exhibition was a faithful reconstruction of an operating theatre from the 1970s, where visitors could take part in a virtual operation, smell scents and hear the sounds of the instruments. Later a room from the 18th century was added.
The museum occupies the ground floor of the hospital pavilion and presents the development of surgery over the last 200 years on the basis of about 485 exhibits: old instruments, prostheses, implants, anatomical preparations, books, journals, paintings and engravings. The most valuable include the heart-lung machine of the team of Prof. Tadeusz Paliwoda, the operating table of Prof. Wiktor Bross and the first Polish hip endoprosthesis from Piekary Śląskie. The exhibition is complemented by a video and sound system and by biographies of distinguished doctors.
Because of its content, young people under 15 could visit the museum only in the care of adults. According to the tourist information portal of Wisła, the museum is closed until further notice; newer sources do not confirm that visits have resumed.
