About the museum

The present brick manor house in Górki Wielkie was built by Hieronim Marklowski on the site of an older larch-wood manor. When Marklowski’s heirs lost the estate, the building became a granary. In 1922 the building was leased, and soon afterwards it was bought by the parents of the writer Zofia Kossak, Tadeusz and Anna née Kisielnicka, who had come from the Eastern Borderlands (Kresy Wschodnie). In 1923 Zofia, a young widow with her sons, also moved there, and the manor became a hospitable meeting place for people of culture; among its guests were Jan Parandowski, Maria Dąbrowska and Wojciech Kossak with his children.

The Kossaks had to leave the manor after the outbreak of the Second World War, and in May 1945 the building burned down together with valuable wooden elements. The writer dreamed of rebuilding it until the end of her life. Only her heirs, who founded the Zofia Kossak Foundation, brought about the revitalisation of the manor ruins, and the Centrum Kultury i Sztuki “Dwór Kossaków” (Kossak Manor Culture and Art Centre) was created here.

Multimedia equipment in the building allows visitors to view archival family photographs and listen to statements by the writer and her daughter, while large-format prints on the walls refer to the life and work of Zofia Kossak and her family. Around the manor house there is a park, and in the summer season cultural events take place here. Next to it, in a former gardener’s house, is a separate Museum of Zofia Kossak-Szatkowska.
