About the museum
The Printing Museum was established in 1980 as a branch of the Historical Museum of Warsaw (Muzeum Historyczne m.st. Warszawy), which since 2014 has been called the Warsaw Museum. From 1982 to 2010 it was housed in a tenement house at ul. Łucka 1/3/5, on the grounds of the former Norblin works. There it showed, among other things, a reconstructed eighteenth-century printing press and the furnishings of the study of the Warsaw publisher Salomon Lewental. After the property was sold, the collections were moved to a storage facility in Pruszków, and the museum office was moved to ul. Trębacka.
In 2015 the museum began operating in its new seat at ul. Ząbkowska 23/25 in Praga-Północ. The collections include historic objects of printing, publishing, graphic and bookbinding arts, as well as machines and devices used by former printers. The permanent exhibition is the Printing House (Oficyna Drukarska), where visitors learn techniques long out of use in printing.
During a visit you can see books, ephemera and metal printing tools, learn the principles of letterpress printing and then print a commemorative item yourself on a historic press. The museum also runs educational classes on the history of the book, printing, graphic techniques and bookmaking, aimed at age groups from kindergarten children to students. Some of the collections are available on the e-Kolekcje portal.
