About the museum
The first attempts to set up an Orthodox museum in Warsaw were made in 1972 on the initiative of Metropolitan Basil, but the museum was formally established only in 1983, when its statute was approved. From the start the institution had premises problems: the rooms intended for the exhibition were taken over by the growing parish of St Mary Magdalene, which made activity practically impossible.
The museum resumed work on 24 April 2007 on the decision of Metropolitan Sawa and received a seat in the metropolitan buildings at al. Solidarności 52. In 2009 its branch, the Museum of Icons at ul. Lelechowska 5, was established. After the Orthodox Culture Centre at ul. Świętych Cyryla i Metodego 4 was completed, the museum moved to the ground floor of that building, where it has one exhibition hall.
At the beginning of 2016 a permanent exhibition was opened there, in which, alongside icons, visitors can see liturgical vestments, historic books, crosses from various Christian traditions and many objects testifying to the spiritual and cultural richness of Orthodoxy. The collections number more than 1,200 exhibits. The museum is an ecclesiastical cultural institution that collects, conserves and makes available objects of Orthodox religious culture from the area of the Metropolis of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
