About the museum

The Muzeum Warszawskiej Pragi (Warsaw Praga Museum) is a branch of the Muzeum Warszawy and the first museum institution on the right bank of the Vistula. It is located at ul. Targowa 50/52, next to the Różycki Bazaar, in a group of historic tenement houses: the Rothblitt tenement house from 1818–1819 and 1829–1830, the Sokołowski tenement house from 1872–1873, and an outbuilding in the courtyard. As part of the investment the historic courtyard was also renovated and a new administrative and educational building was erected.

A Jewish prayer house was located in the former tenement houses. Its halls have preserved polychromies depicting praying Jews at the Western Wall in Jerusalem and at the Tomb of Rachel in Bethlehem. They are unique on the scale of Warsaw and Mazovia and are an important source of knowledge about the colours of such decorations, which are otherwise known only from black-and-white photographs.

The revitalisation of the buildings cost almost PLN 36 million and was co-financed from the European Regional Development Fund under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme. The museum is co-created by residents of the right bank of Warsaw; it runs, among other things, an archive of oral history, the craft workshop PraRzemka, Judaica-related routes and educational activities for children and schools.
