About the museum

The Muzeum Pro Memoria Edith Stein (Pro Memoria Edith Stein Museum) opened on 28 February 2009 in a townhouse that belonged to the Courant family, the grandparents of Edith Stein. The future saint spent many holidays here in her childhood and youth. The institution was blessed by Bishop Jan Wieczorek, and in 2012 President Bronisław Komorowski visited it.

Edith Stein, a philosopher of Jewish origin, a Carmelite nun and a martyr, was murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942. In 1999 Pope John Paul II declared her patron saint of Europe, and Lubliniec regards her as the patron saint of the town.

On the upper floor of the townhouse there are two rooms with a permanent exhibition on the life of the saint; films from the ceremony at which the town was granted her patronage are shown, and the exhibition is multimedia in character. The building also has a multi-purpose hall, and one of the rooms is used for temporary exhibitions. The Centrum Informacji Turystycznej (Tourist Information Centre) is located in the same building.
