About the museum

The Muzeum Historyczne (Historical Museum) collects objects connected with the history and art of Wrocław. Its seat is the Baroque-Classicist Royal Palace (Pałac Królewski) with a garden. From 1750 to 1918 the palace was one of the residences of the Prussian rulers of the Hohenzollern dynasty, who extended it many times. Since 1926 the building has had a museum function, and after a thorough renovation it has become a modern exhibition centre.

The collections of the Wrocław City Museum (Muzeum Miejskie Wrocławia) are presented in the multimedia permanent exhibition “1000 Years of Wrocław” (1000 lat Wrocławia), modernised in 2016. It covers 21 rooms and more than 3000 objects, from the founding of the bishopric in 1000 to the year 2000. Among the exhibits are the oldest police badge in Poland, from 1540, the “Treasure of Bremen” (Skarb z Bremy), archival photographs and a prison guillotine used in the city in 1945.

The exhibition is supplemented by the royal chambers, six restored rooms including the Rococo room of Frederick II and the yellow room of Frederick William III, in which the proclamation “To My People” (Do mojego ludu) was issued in 1813, and the Baroque Beyersdorf Room from about 1730, lined with tiles of the Delft type. The palace also houses the Museum of Medal Art (Muzeum Sztuki Medalierskiej), whose some 50,000 medals, medallions, plaques and decorations enrich the permanent exhibition.
