About the museum

The Muzeum Foteli Katapultowych w Oleśnicy (Ejection Seat Museum in Oleśnica) was created from the private collection of Radosław Szukała, a police officer from Wrocław and aviation enthusiast. The collection began more than fifteen years ago with a partly dismantled ejection seat from a MiG-21, which he received in return for helping to move the aviation open-air museum of Marian Hołda. The collection was first shown in a home cellar and garage, and later in premises in the centre of Oleśnica.

The museum is housed in a former cinema building at ul. 3 Maja 18 and occupies about 180 m². It has been approved by the Ministry of Culture and is sometimes called the first and only museum of its kind in Poland. Oleśnica has been linked with aviation since 1955, when the Officer Technical School of the Air Force (Oficerska Szkoła Techniczna Wojsk Lotniczych) was set up here.

The collection includes ejection seats from combat aircraft, as well as pilots’ seats without an ejection system, flight clothing, flight suits, helmets and masks, models, engines, airframe parts, cockpit equipment and documentation. A separate display case is devoted to successful ejections, and among the memorabilia is a fragment of the wing of the RWD-6 aircraft in which Franciszek Żwirko and Stanisław Wigura died.
