About the museum
The Muzeum Woldenberczyków in Dobiegniew was founded in 1987 on the initiative of former prisoners of the German POW camp Oflag II C Woldenberg. It is housed in a barrack in the German part of the camp, which during the Second World War stood about a kilometre from the town and covered around 25 hectares. Over five years, more than 6,000 Polish officers and non-commissioned officers, who had taken part in the September Campaign and the Warsaw Uprising, were held there.
The prisoners organised a rich cultural and educational life in the camp. Sports clubs held camp Olympic Games in 1944, and there were a drama theatre, a puppet theatre, orchestras, study circles and extensive libraries. The first Woldenberg University was founded here under Prof. Kazimierz Michałowski, and an underground resistance movement was active at the same time, in which radio monitoring played a key role.
The museum holds around 2,500 catalogued exhibits, most of them donations from former prisoners and their families: camp post stamps, woodcuts, sculptures, manuscripts, sheet music, photographs, documents from the camp command, camp currency, theatre masks and everyday objects. The exhibition covers around 400 m², and part of the fittings were brought in from other barracks, including the doors of the camp prison, gravestones from the camp cemetery and a fragment of the altar from the camp chapel. The modernised museum was opened in September 2022.
