About the museum
The Muzeum Regionalne in Barlinek grew out of the collection of Czesław Paśnik (1919–1981), a regional historian, collector and documentarist of the first post-war years of rebuilding the destroyed town. In 1961 a Room of Memorabilia (Izba Pamiątek) was set up on the basis of his private collection, and the museum developed from it. Today the institution operates at the Barlinecki Ośrodek Kultury (Barlinek Cultural Centre) and is housed in the so-called Dom Gutenberga (Gutenberg House), a former printing works from the mid-19th century at ul. Niepodległości, with the main entrance from ul. Paderewskiego. A branch of the museum is located in Dziedzice, about 15 kilometres from the town.
The interiors have a pre-war Barlinek atmosphere linked to Emanuel Lasker (1868–1941), the town’s most eminent son and world chess champion, who held the title for a record 27 years. The exhibition presents his life and career: copies of the birth certificates of the Lasker family, stamps from around the world, documents, photographs, books and magazines. The museum is also expanding its collection of chess sets from different parts of the world.
An arranged Barlinek street presents postcards and photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as a model and diorama of the railway station from 1898. One room is devoted to the Waldschenke restaurant from 1913, destroyed in 1945. The ethnographic exhibition recreates a room from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the archaeological collection includes finds from the Neolithic to the Early Iron Age. The newest permanent exhibition is “Salonik Królowej Puszczy Barlineckiej” (Parlour of the Queen of the Barlinek Forest), from 2015. The museum runs history lessons and the “Muzeum Café” series of meetings.
