About the museum
The museum in Dukla grew out of an exhibition of weapons and soldiers’ equipment collected on the battlefields around the town, created in the 1960s. It became an independent institution, initially under the name Muzeum Braterstwa Broni (Museum of Brotherhood in Arms), on 1 March 1972, and has borne its present name since 1991. Since 1999 it has been a unit of the Powiat Krośnieński (Krosno County).
The museum is housed in the palace of the Mniszech family, rebuilt after 1636 within bastion fortifications in the style of an Italian palazzo in fortezza. In the eighteenth century it was converted into a late Baroque residence in the French style, surrounded by a terraced garden. In 1975 the museum took over the damaged palace complex, and the renovation was completed in 1984, when an exhibition on the Dukla–Preszów operation of 1944 was opened in the main building.
Today visitors can learn about the history of Dukla and the palace and see several military exhibitions, from the battles in the Carpathians during the First World War, through September 1939, to the Carpathian-Dukla operation of autumn 1944. In the courtyard in front of the building stands an open-air display of heavy weapons, and the historic palace park adjoins the museum.
