About the museum
The Prywatne Muzeum Podkarpackich Pól Bitewnych (Private Museum of the Subcarpathian Battlefields) was entered in the register of private museums in 2003. It was founded by Dorota and Piotr Kiełtyk and Lesław Wilk, who are also its guides. The collections come from the founders’ own collection, gathered over about forty years; many objects were collected in various corners of the Podkarpacie region, where they were deteriorating and easily accessible at the time. The museum was opened to visitors in November 2013.
The exhibitions currently comprise about 2,000 exhibits, which are deposits of the organisers. They concern the battlefields of the Podkarpacie region from 1914–1945. The permanent exhibition is housed in the museum building; it is supplemented by a semi-open-air exhibition on the property and an adjoining air-raid shelter from the Second World War, which belonged to the infrastructure of the Krosno airport.
The exhibitions include, among others, “Karpaty 1914–1915”, “Szkoła Podoficerów Lotnictwa dla Małoletnich w Krośnie 1938–1939” (the aviation NCO school for minors in Krosno), “Wrzesień 1939”, “Konspiracja niepodległościowa” (Independence Underground), “Dukla 1944” and “Podkarpacie 1945”. An original plaque from above the gate of the forced labour camp in Szebnie is also on display. The museum cooperates with similar institutions and lends its collections for temporary exhibitions, and it offers schools support in learning the history of the region.
