About the museum
The Jan Kasprowicz Museum in Inowrocław is an institution of the Inowrocław district. The first museum initiatives in the town date from the interwar period: in 1927 a room devoted to the poet Jan Kasprowicz was opened in Szymborze, and in 1929 the Aviation and Gas Museum (Muzeum Lotniczo-Gazowe). The outbreak of the Second World War interrupted work on the Regional Museum of Western Kuyavia, and many of the collected exhibits were lost.
The present institution was established in 1959 as the Jan Kasprowicz Municipal Museum; its first seat was the rooms of the Municipal Theatre at pl. Klasztorny. From 1976 to 1980 it operated as a branch of the Bydgoszcz District Museum. In 1976 the museum bought the house of the Kasprowicz family in Szymborze, which became its branch. In 1986 the former bourgeois palace from 1896 at ul. Solankowa 33 was bought back and became the main seat; the transfer of the collections was completed in 2007. In 1987 the museum received the collections of the closed Solno salt mine.
Today the permanent exhibitions present the life and work of Kasprowicz, the Young Poland legend of Stanisław Przybyszewski, the Stanisław Szenic study, the memory of Inowrocław artists and the history of Inowrocław from prehistory to 1939. Separate displays are devoted to the Solno salt mine. The Jan Kasprowicz Family Home in Szymborze was opened to visitors on 1 July 2023 after a general renovation.
