About the museum
The Muzeum Markowickiego Sanktuarium (Markowice Shrine Museum) has operated since 2014 at the shrine of Our Lady, Queen of Love and Peace, Lady of Kuyavia (Matki Bożej Królowej Miłości i Pokoju Pani Kujaw), in Markowice near Strzelno. It holds exhibits relating to the history of the church, the former monastery and Markowice itself. The institution has a parish character, and the shrine is currently looked after by priests of the Archdiocese of Gniezno.
The history of the site goes back to 1630, when a Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child, renowned for its graces, was brought to Markowice. The first custodians of the shrine were Carmelites, who arrived in 1642. The brick baroque church was built in 1710 and consecrated in 1714. After the suppression of the order in 1825 the shrine kept its status as a centre of worship in Kuyavia for a long time.
In 1921 the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (oblaci Maryi Niepokalanej) took over the care of the shrine and ran it until 2013. In 1965 the statue was crowned with papal crowns, and in 2015 the church was granted the dignity of a minor basilica. The museum complements a visit to the baroque church with its rococo high altar from 1765.
