About the museum

The idea of establishing a museum in Koło arose between the wars, and one of its initiators was Czesław Freudenreich, heir to the family faience factory founded in 1842. A considerable part of the Freudenreich collection was dispersed during the occupation. In 1946 the short-lived Muzeum Rejonowe w Kościelcu (Kościelec District Museum) was created, and in 1974 a ceramics museum was planned.

From 1 July 1975 the institution operated as the Muzeum w Kole, in a 19th-century tenement house at ul. Michała Kajki 44; from 1979 as a branch of the Muzeum Okręgowe w Koninie (Konin District Museum); and from 1984 as an independent institution. In 2004 it was entered in the register of cultural institutions kept by the town of Koło.

The collection is dominated by ceramics from the Faience Factory in Koło, including the most valuable products from 1843–1880, as well as faience and majolica of the Freudenreich family and ceramics from other Polish and European manufactories. The museum also presents archaeological finds from the Bronze Age and the Roman period, and an exhibition on the history of Koło. It runs museum lessons and workshops in ceramic decoration.
