About the museum
The museum’s beginnings go back to 24 November 1883, when the Towarzystwo Starożytności (Antiquities Society) was established in Grudziądz. The museum was officially opened on 15 June 1884 and has operated without interruption ever since. It was named after Fr Dr Władysław Łęga on the 120th anniversary of its existence, and in 2024, on its 140th anniversary, the institution received the Silver Medal “Zasłużony Kulturze Gloria Artis” (Gloria Artis Medal for Merit to Culture).
The main building at ul. Wodna 3/5 belongs to a former Benedictine convent dating from the 17th century; after it was burned in 1945 it was rebuilt in 1950–1954 and opened for exhibitions on 21 July 1956. The museum also includes historic granaries, the Pałac Opatek (Palace of the Abbesses) with an exhibition on the cavalry, Góra Zamkowa (Castle Hill) with the Wieża Klimek (Klimek Tower), the Brama Wodna (Water Gate) and, since 2022, the Muzeum Handlu Wiślanego (Vistula Trade Museum) in the granaries at ul. Spichrzowa 33–35.
The permanent exhibitions cover the history of Grudziądz from the Middle Ages to 1939, the Centrum Wyszkolenia Kawalerii w Grudziądzu 1920–1939 (Cavalry Training Centre), archaeological exhibitions and the Galeria Współczesnego Malarstwa Pomorskiego (Gallery of Contemporary Pomeranian Painting). The collections include, among other things, more than 7,600 archaeological items, as well as the ethnography of Kuyavia, Kociewie and Kashubia, coins and art.
