About the museum
The museum in Nowe Miasto nad Pilicą opened in 1960, on the 560th anniversary of the town being granted town rights. It was founded by Stanisław Tkacz, a high-school teacher and enthusiast of local history, who donated most of his collection to the institution. For many years the museum had no permanent seat; it operated, among other places, in the high school and later in several locations on Plac Koźmińskiego and in other parts of the town.
After the curator Jerzy Porada retired in 2013, the museum suspended its activity for two years. In 2015 a new employee took over the care of the collections, and the mayor assigned the former council chamber and adjoining rooms in the town and municipal office building to the museum. Since 2016 the institution has been looked after by the Town and Municipal Cultural Centre, supported by the Friends of Nowe Miasto nad Pilicą Society.
The collections comprise over a thousand exhibits from archaeology, ethnography, history, art and numismatics. The oldest include stone tools from the Neolithic and Bronze Age, medieval clay vessels and 17th-century early printed books. A separate group consists of souvenirs from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries connected with Dr Jan Biliński and his natural healing establishment.
