About the museum
The ethnographic department was set up in 1960 within the Muzeum Ziemi Lubuskiej in Zielona Góra and dealt with saving the folk heritage of the Lubusz region. In 1972, on the initiative of the conservator of monuments, it was decided to create the Park Budownictwa Ludowego (Park of Folk Architecture) in Ochla, and the first building moved there, in 1973, was a hut from Potrzebowo from the end of the seventeenth century. In 1976 the park was merged with the ethnographic department into the Zielonogórski Park Etnograficzny (Zielona Góra Ethnographic Park), and in 1982 the institution became an independent Muzeum Etnograficzne in Zielona Góra with its seat in Ochla.
The museum today covers more than 13 hectares and presents the architecture and folk culture of several regions: western Greater Poland, Lower Lusatia, the central Lubusz region and Lower Silesia. The open-air museum has cottages, barns, cowsheds, a windmill, a water mill and small sacred buildings, and the outdoor display is complemented by more than 10,000 objects, including folk costumes, textiles, folk art and everyday items.
Part of the museum is also a Baroque manor house from the seventeenth century in the north-western part of Ochla which, after renovation in 2024, serves as the Centrum Kultur Europejskich (Centre of European Cultures) and as a venue for temporary exhibitions and events. Museum lessons, workshops and outdoor events take place on the open-air site, and families can use an outdoor game and an audio guide.
