About the museum
The first attempts to found a museum in Łuków were made in 1920 and 1925, but they failed. The idea returned in 1957, and in 1959 the county authorities decided to organise a regional museum. The institution was housed in the former Konwikt Szaniawskich and opened in March 1967.
The Baroque building was erected in the 1730s on the initiative of Bishop Konstanty Felicjan Szaniawski, and is listed as a historic monument. Over time it served various functions, including as a school boarding house, administrative offices, a private residence and a court. Since 1 January 2022 a stair platform lift for wheelchair users has operated from the courtyard side. The owner of the building is the Powiat Łukowski (Łuków County).
The permanent exhibitions present the history of Łuków and the Łuków Land from the 13th century to the end of the Second World War, the tools and equipment of the old village, the history of beekeeping, ammonite fossils from the Jurassic deposits of the region, the history of Łuków’s Jews, and the works of the Łukowski Ośrodek Rzeźby Ludowej (Łuków Folk Sculpture Centre), which has operated at the museum since 1965. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions.
