About the museum
The Museum of John Paul II in Stalowa Wola was established on 4 November 2009 by decree of the Bishop of Sandomierz. The collection is based on the holdings of Fr Prof. Wilhelm Gaj-Piotrowski, the main initiator of the institution. The co-cathedral parish, the Stalowa Wola Chapter, the Diocesan Museum in Sandomierz and the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola took part in creating the museum. It is housed on the ground floor of the Catechetical House next to the Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland.
The first exhibition recalls the papal teaching as a spiritual testament, arranged in thematic lessons: on the human person, homeland, the Church, family, youth, love, forgiveness, peace, freedom, joy and dialogue. Large-format photographs and quotations accompany memorabilia associated with St John Paul II, and film screenings are shown in a separate room. It also presents the pope’s links with Stalowa Wola, especially the consecration of the local church in 1973.
The last stage in building the museum was the exhibition “A jutro jest nieznane. Podziemna Solidarność w Stalowej Woli w latach 1982–1989” (And Tomorrow Is Unknown: Underground Solidarity in Stalowa Wola), opened on 11 December 2016 within the project “Patriotyzm Jutra” (Patriotism of Tomorrow). It was organised by the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola and tells the story of Solidarity in Stalowa Wola and of the August 1988 strikes.
