About the museum
The Muzeum Flisactwa Polskiego (Museum of Polish Rafting) has been operating in Ulanów since 2 May 2015. It is housed in a wooden house from 1865 on the market square, right next to the town hall. The building once belonged to one of Ulanów's retmen, that is, the managers of timber rafting. It is a municipal institution.
Ulanów, located at the mouth of the Tanew river where it flows into the San, had the richest rafting traditions in Poland from the 16th to the 20th century. Rafts were built here, and retmen and rafters floated timber from the Sandomierz Forest, as well as grain, down the San and the Vistula, mainly to Gdańsk. The last timber float from Ulanów to Gdańsk took place in summer 1939, and the last raft sailed in 1968.
The collection, which includes more than eight hundred exhibits, comprises rafting tools and equipment, documents including shipping bills, archival photographs and furniture from the homes of rafting families. Visitors can see a copy of the Book of the Guild of Retmen and Steersmen from 1765–1928 and the income and expenditure ledgers of the St. Barbara Brotherhood from 1882–1918. The vast majority of the collection comes from descendants of former rafting families and local donors.
