About the museum
The Muzeum Diecezjalne in Sandomierz is housed in the House of Długosz (Dom Długosza), built in 1476 with an endowment from the chronicler and cleric Jan Długosz for a congregation of vicars (mansjonarze). The brick, two-storey building stands not far from the royal castle and the collegiate church, on the edge of the escarpment in the south-eastern part of the town. In the sixteenth century it was decorated with an attic, and in the second half of the seventeenth century it was rebuilt after the damage of the Swedish invasion.
After the congregation of vicars was dissolved in 1819, the house was taken over by the chapter, but over time it fell into ruin. Repairs were carried out in 1865, and a thorough restoration for the needs of the diocesan museum took place in 1934–1936 on the initiative of Bishop Włodzimierz Jasiński. The permanent exhibition was arranged according to a concept by Karol Estreicher junior of 1937, so that it kept the character of a collection saving objects from destruction.
The collections include paintings, sacred sculpture, textiles, artistic crafts, ceramics, furniture, coins and archaeological finds. The best-known exhibits include the wooden books (księgi drzewne), a casket organ (pozytyw szkatułowy), the gloves of Queen Jadwiga, the Madonna from Gołźlice and a painting by Lucas Cranach. The museum also presents temporary exhibitions in its cellars.
