About the museum
The Suraż Museum of Wayside Shrines (Suraskie Muzeum Kapliczek) was established in 2008 on the private initiative of Ryszard Niedzielski, who is its owner and director. In the same year the house in which the exhibition is set up won a regional competition for the best-preserved wooden rural building.
The collection contains shrines made by local folk artists. According to different sources there are between about one hundred and about three hundred and fifty of them. They depict Christ, the Virgin Mary and saints, among them St Florian, St John of Nepomuk, St Roch, St Ambrose and St Lawrence. Most of them stand in the enclosed veranda, and a few stand outside. The veranda also holds sculptures from other regions of Poland and from abroad, bought at antique fairs or donated.
In 2023 the media reported that the museum could be visited despite the owner's illness, after telephone contact at the number posted at the museum.
