About the museum
The Muzeum Kultury Materialnej “Baćkauszczyna” was founded in 2009 on the initiative of Fr Grzegorz Sosna, parish priest of the local Orthodox parish. The solemn opening took place on 1 May 2009, and the museum was blessed by Metropolitan Sawa. The name refers to the dialect word “baćkauszczyna”, meaning ancestral inheritance.
The museum is housed in a building from the early 19th century, in which a primary school operated until 2007. The Gmina Zabłudów lent it to the parish free of charge. For many years it was looked after by the founder's wife, Matuszka (priest's wife) Antonina Troc-Sosna. The building was later renovated under an Interreg project and adapted for visitors.
The exhibits come mainly from donations by residents of the surrounding villages and document the life of the Belarusian population of Podlasie. The collections include farming tools, the equipment of a smithy and a carpentry workshop, clothing of linen and wool, icons decorated with embroidered towels, beds, chests, and reconstructed interiors of an old kitchen and a large room. Each object has a description with information about its origin and donor.
