About the museum
The Pranie forester's lodge, called Seehorst before the war, was built around 1880 and was the forestry station of the village of Krzyże. It lies in the Piska Forest right by Lake Nidzkie, and the Polish name comes from a meadow over which mist used to rise. It became known through the stays of the poet Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, who first came here in July 1950 as a guest of the forester Stanisław Popowski and returned for the following three years. In 1952, together with his wife Natalia, he planned to settle in the area permanently, but his sudden death in December 1953 prevented this.
In the forester's lodge he wrote, among other works, the “Kronika olsztyńska” (Olsztyn Chronicle), “Niobe” and “Wit Stwosz”. In 1980 a poet's museum was set up here as a branch of the Muzeum Okręgowe w Suwałkach (District Museum in Suwałki); after the administrative reform of 2000 it is subordinate to the Rada Powiatu w Piszu (County Council in Pisz).
The new permanent exhibition, realised in 2023, presents the poet's biography, his stays in Masuria, his theatre output, music in and set to his poems, and his special bond with his wife Natalia. It is based on original objects of Gałczyński's and on multimedia, through which visitors can hear the poet's voice and fragments of archival films. In summer, concerts of classical music and literary songs are held in Pranie.
