About the museum
The Muzeum Regionalne im. Walentyny Dermackiej z Sapiehów (Regional Museum named after Walentyna Dermacka née Sapieha) was established in 2011 as a municipal cultural institution, run by the Gminny Ośrodek Kultury Sportu i Rekreacji “Pegaz” (Municipal Centre of Culture, Sport and Recreation “Pegaz”) in Piecki. The collections were moved there in May 2012.
The collection was started in the 1960s by Walentyna Dermacka (1922–1999), who settled in Piecki in 1958. After her death the collections were looked after by her daughter Maria. The core of the collection consists of clay figurines by Władysława Prucnal from Medyna Głogowska, who came from a family of potters. Dermacka became acquainted with her work in 1974 and for decades ordered further cycles of sculptures.
The figurines are arranged in more than a dozen cycles, including “Od ziarenka do bochenka” (From Grain to Loaf), “Adam i Ewa” (Adam and Eve), “Dobrodziejstwo wody” (The Gift of Water) and “Garncarstwo” (Pottery). The museum also has wooden sculptures, paintings by local artists, old household equipment, furniture, and 17th- and 19th-century Bibles printed in Masuria.
