About the museum
The Ośrodek Edukacji Przyrodniczo-Kulturowej w Krutyni is run by the Mazurski Park Krajobrazowy (Masurian Landscape Park). It is housed in a historic Masurian barn in the centre of the village, built at the end of the 19th century.
The nature room (Izba Przyrodnicza) dates back to 1991, when the park, together with the Muzeum Warmii i Mazur w Olsztynie (Museum of Warmia and Masuria in Olsztyn), prepared a nature and archaeology exhibition. In 1998 the loaned archaeological objects were returned to Olsztyn, and the nature part was moved to the present barn. Today the room consists of six dioramas showing the animals of the forest, the lake, the River Krutynia and the meadow; more than 300 exhibits have been collected, mainly birds that died in road accidents or on power lines.
The building also houses the Izba Pamięci Karola Małłka (Karol Małłek Memorial Room), dedicated to the writer, folklorist and teacher committed to the affairs of the Masurians, with mementoes, photographs and furniture from his home. The “Galeria nad Mukrem” (Gallery on the Mukra) shows nature and historical-cultural exhibitions, and on the upper floor there is an education room, where workshops, lectures and demonstrations take place.
