About the museum
The Poster Museum in Wilanów is a branch of the National Museum in Warsaw and is considered the first poster museum in the world. Its collections originate from a pre-war collection of about 500 posters in the Gabinet Rycin (Cabinet of Prints), which came to the museum as gifts from graphic artists and collectors. After the war, a section was formed from them, later a Poster Department.
Janina Fijałkowska is regarded as the initiator and first curator of the institution. The museum was built on the site of a former riding hall belonging to the Wilanów palace complex; the mid-19th-century façade by Franciszek Maria Lanci, with sculptures of horses, survived. A modern building with a large exhibition hall was built behind it. The foundation stone was laid in 1966, and the museum opened on 4 June 1968, during the International Poster Biennale.
The collection of Polish posters numbers nearly 36 thousand items and covers works from the Young Poland period to contemporary graphic design. After a break the museum is open to visitors again and presents these collections in successive editions of the exhibition “Plakat polski. Kolekcja” (Polish Poster. Collection).
