About the museum

The Muzeum Książki Środkowego Nadodrza (Museum of the Book of the Middle Oder Region) opened in 1977 in the new premises of the Wojewódzka i Miejska Biblioteka Publiczna im. Cypriana Norwida (Cyprian Norwid Regional and Municipal Public Library) in Zielona Góra. It was located on the top floor of the library and presented the history of the Polish book and of libraries in Lower Silesia and the Lubusz Land, as well as the interaction between Polish and German culture in the region. Today the exhibition operates as the Muzeum Ilustracji Książkowej (Museum of Book Illustration); according to the library's history, it was established in 2011.

The exhibition shows the development of illustration in printed books from the 15th to the 21st century: from woodcut, copperplate and steel engraving to lithography, and to 20th-century woodcut and linocut. It includes early prints, 19th-century books and periodicals, tools and materials for making prints, decorative bindings, bookplates and a historic bookbinding gilding press from the Viennese workshop of Josef Anger. Contemporary illustration is represented by original designs by, among others, Jan Marcin Szancer, Zbigniew Rychlicki, Józef Wilkoń, Olga Siemaszko, Bohdan Butenko and Jerzy Flisak.

Among the exhibits are the oldest view of Kraków in print, from Hartmann Schedel's “Liber chronicarum” of 1493, an 18th-century handwritten antiphonary used in the Stalag VIII C prisoner-of-war camp in Żagań during the Second World War, and illustrations for children's books. The library plans to modernise and move the museum to a modern, more accessible space; the Ministry of Culture co-financed the project.
