About the museum

The origins of the Muzeum Ziemi Lubuskiej go back to 1908, when Albert Severin, a resident of Zielona Góra, gave the town a collection illustrating the heritage of the local guilds. The Muzeum w Zielonej Górze was established in 1922 on the initiative of the Towarzystwo Pielęgnacji Tradycji Regionalnej (Society for the Cultivation of Regional Traditions), and until 1945 it operated as a Heimatmuseum.

After the war the collections grew steadily, and in 1978–1985 independent museums were split off from the ethnographic, archaeological and historical departments in Ochla, Świdnica and Drzonów. Most of the rooms were then given over to galleries of individual contemporary artists. After the museum came under the supervision of the Board of the Lubusz Voivodeship in 1998, the programme was changed: most of the artists’ galleries were closed, more emphasis was placed on local heritage, and new galleries were created, including ones devoted to the painting of Tadeusz Kuntze and to the history of Zielona Góra.

Today the museum presents more than a dozen permanent exhibitions: old and contemporary art, including a collection of Polish art of the twentieth century in the Złote Grono Gallery, a historical department, and viticulture linked to the wine-growing traditions of Zielona Góra. After an extension in 2020 a large concert and conference hall was opened, and in the cellars a Museum of Wine and a Museum of Historical Torture were set up. Temporary exhibitions are complemented by concerts and recurring events, including “Jazzujące Muzeum” (The Jazzing Museum).
