About the museum

The Muzeum Lalek in Pilzno grew out of the Pracownia Artystyczna “Kasia” (“Kasia” Art Studio), which from 1981 designed and sewed costumes for dolls based on historical and ethnographic patterns. Over the years a rich collection of dolls from around the world was built up, gathered at international events and on private travels. The institution was renamed the Muzeum Lalek (Doll Museum), and it gained museum status in 2003. It is a private enterprise run by its owner.

The museum has the exhibitions “Lalki z całego świata” (Dolls from Around the World), “Lalki polskie” (Polish Dolls), “Na babcinym strychu” (In Grandma's Attic), “Królewna Śnieżka” (Snow White), and the largest collection of Japanese dolls in Poland. An integral part of the visit is the tour of the workshops, where it is shown how dolls are made by hand from various materials. The museum also runs museum workshops for groups, a doll clinic, and lends out exhibitions.

Since 2000 the museum has had a branch in Lipiny, on the A4 road between Tarnów and Dębica. It comprises a miniature village inspired by Władysław Reymont's “Chłopi” (The Peasants), a fairy-tale garden with a castle, and the Gospoda u Wiedźmy (Witch's Inn) with an exhibition of original Japanese dolls. The branch is closed in winter.
