About the museum

The Regional Museum in Dębica has operated since 2003 on the site of the former military barracks. The Society of Friends of Science (Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Nauk), today the Society of Friends of the Dębica Land (TPZD), had already proposed setting up a regional museum in 1960, but the idea was realised only at the beginning of 2003. The first director was Janusz Ożóg, and the seat was set up in a building from the late 19th century, after the cavalry barracks. The first collections came from the regional room of the TPZD, from the company tradition rooms of Dębica firms and from private individuals.

In 2007, in connection with the revitalisation of the former military site, the museum received two neighbouring buildings: one was given to an exhibition on the history of the Dębica garrison, the other to an archive and library. The collections are arranged in departments: historical, archaeological, ethnographic, military and art. Since 2023 the director has been Tomasz Czapla, and in 2023 the museum celebrated its twentieth anniversary.

The permanent exhibitions present the history of the town and region from prehistoric times to the Second World War, and some of them have been rebuilt. In the open air on the museum grounds one can see a collection of militaria, including T-34 and IS-2 tanks, a Mi-2 helicopter and a narrow-gauge railway, as well as a collection of historic fire carts from the period from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.
