About the museum

The building at ul. Uniwersytecka in Lublin was put into use in 1930 as the seat of the District Land Office. In January 1940 it was taken over by the German security police, and during the occupation it housed the Gestapo headquarters. The prisoners called the place the “Pod Zegarem” (Under the Clock) house.

In the cellars a prison for political prisoners was set up, with 12 cells, dark cells and a punishment cell. It is estimated that around 200 people were murdered here in 1942–1944. After the Germans left Lublin in July 1944, the prison was taken over by the Soviet political police, and then the building was occupied by the military.

The Martyrology Branch “Pod Zegarem” was solemnly opened on 23 September 1979, thanks to the efforts of the Club of Former Political Prisoners of the Lublin Castle and “Pod Zegarem” and in cooperation with the District Museum in Lublin. In 2017 the renovation of the rooms was completed and a new exhibition was opened. The museum is a branch of the National Museum in Lublin.
