About the museum
The Museum of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (Muzeum Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego Jana Pawła II) was established on 1 September 2016 by merging two museum-type units. The core of the collections is an art collection from the former University Museum, established on the initiative of Canon Jan Władziński in 1932. It is supplemented by documents and mementos gathered in 2008–2016 by the University Historical Museum of KUL (Muzeum Uniwersyteckie Historii KUL).
The pre-war collections were looted by the Germans in December 1939 and are still considered lost. After the war the university authorities rebuilt the collection, among other things thanks to a donation of works of Silesian art from the 14th–18th centuries from the Archdiocese of Wrocław, and sculptures transferred from state museum depositories.
The museum was located in the university’s main building, in the rooms of the former Dominican refectory (room 29), reached through a courtyard with a monument to the meeting of John Paul II with Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. The museum building is now under renovation, and the museum remains closed until further notice; a temporary office operates in the John Paul II College (Kolegium Jana Pawła II).
