About the museum
Słońsk, known until 1945 as Sonnenburg, was the site of a penitentiary. After Hitler came to power, a German concentration camp was set up here, one of the first, to which political opponents of the regime were sent. Among those imprisoned was the German journalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Carl von Ossietzky. After the camp was closed more than a year later, the penitentiary continued to operate here. On the night of 30 to 31 January 1945, 819 prisoners of various nationalities were murdered.
In 1973 the authorities of Słońsk and local residents decided to commemorate the victims, which led to the creation of the museum and a monument. The Museum of Martyrology was opened on 28 September 1974.
After almost thirty years the exhibition needed changing and the building needed renovation. Thanks to Polish–German cooperation, a project to modernise the building and develop the grounds was carried out, funded by the cross-border cooperation programme Poland–Brandenburg 2007–2013. The partner of the Gmina Słońsk was the Seelower Höhen Museum in Seelow. The museum also runs educational activities for schools.
