About the museum
The town council of Kostrzyn nad Odrą adopted the resolution to establish the museum in 2000, and the institution began its activity in July 2008, initially in the building of a former barrack of the customs services. After the defensive walls, bastions and gates of the fortress were renovated, the museum took over the historic structures in administration, and its seat was moved to the former Border Guard building.
The permanent exhibition is housed in the casemates of Bastion Filip, built in 1568 as the south-eastern corner of the fortress. In the bastion a German museum devoted to the Küstrin fortress had already been set up in 1929. Today's exhibition is multimedia and interactive, and alongside original relics and finds it contains films, radio plays, models and replicas of weapons.
The museum's holdings also include the area of the Old Town, destroyed in 1945 and referred to as the Kostrzyn Pompeii: paving of streets and pavements, ruins of tenement houses, a castle and a church have survived, as well as the renovated 16th-century bastion fortifications. The area can be visited independently or with a guide.
