About the museum
The beginnings of museum activity in Turek date back to 1962 and are linked to the Turkowskie Towarzystwo Kultury (Turek Society of Culture), which organised exhibitions and collected memorabilia relating to the history of the town. In 1972 a Regional Room (Izba Regionalna) was opened, and in 1977 the seat was moved to rooms in the town hall. From 1978 the institution operated as the Muzeum Rzemiosła Tkackiego (Museum of Weaving Craft), a branch of the Konin Regional Museum, and it regained its independence in 1984 as a municipal unit.
The seat of the museum is the 19th-century town hall at Plac Wojska Polskiego 1. From 2001 it was reconstructed so that the whole building could be devoted to museum purposes, and after the renovation the museum reopened in May 2012 and was named after Józef Mehoffer.
The permanent exhibition “Turkowskie dzieło Józefa Mehoffera” (Józef Mehoffer's Work in Turek) occupies five so-called red rooms and shows the sketches and cartoons for polychromy and stained glass that the artist designed for the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Turek. Besides it, the museum presents an archaeological exhibition from excavations at Gąsin, from the Lusatian culture period, and with fossils from the Adamów mine; an ethnographic exhibition on the life of Turek weavers, with reconstructions of workshops and dwellings; and the exhibition “Opowieści pewnej ulicy – 1956 dni w okupowanym Turku” (Stories of a Certain Street – Days in Occupied Turek), based on about four thousand negatives from 1941–1943 known as the Needle Archive (Archiwum Igły).
