About the museum
The Mission Museum opened in May 1977 in the west wing of the monastery buildings at Święty Krzyż, aimed at pilgrims interested in the history of the monastery and the activity of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Its initiator and organiser was Fr Walenty Zapłata, long-time director of the Oblate Mission Procure. The museum is run by the Congregation of the Missionary Oblates, who now live in the former Benedictine monastery.
The exhibition is housed in three rooms. The first presents the prehistory of Łysa Góra and the history of the Benedictine monastery from the 11th to the 19th century. The second covers the period from the suppression of the order in 1819, through the setting up of a prison within the monastery walls in 1882, to the Second World War, when a German prisoner-of-war camp for Soviet soldiers operated here, in which more than 6 thousand prisoners died. The third room is devoted to the rebuilding of the monastery by the Oblates, who arrived at Święty Krzyż in 1936, and to their missionary work.
The display cases show souvenirs from mission countries in Africa (Cameroon, Lesotho, Egypt, Madagascar), Asia (including Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, India, Japan and China), North America (Canada) and Ukraine: objects of worship, including a Bible in Inuktitut, costumes, ivory and silver jewellery, everyday objects and specimens of fauna. The museum should be visited with respect, as the monastery is an active place of worship.
