About the museum
The Mission Museum in the Mission House of St. Stanislaus Kostka in Chludowo has been operating since the 1990s; the missionary-ethnographic museum was consecrated in 1994, on the 75th anniversary of the Polish Province of the Society of the Divine Word. The Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) have run Chludowo since 1934, when they bought the estate with a castle, a park and a small farm from Roman Dmowski. Today it houses a novitiate, a retreat house and a parish.
Until 2016 the exhibition about Fr. Marian Żelazek was located in one of the rooms of the Mission House together with ethnographic mission exhibits. Some of the collections were then moved to the Muzeum Misyjno-Etnograficzne w Pieniężnie, and in the unused farm buildings a new museum dedicated to Fr. Marian Żelazek was set up, which opened on 12 October 2019.
Fr. Marian Żelazek SVD worked for 56 years in India, including 31 years caring for lepers in Puri, where he built a hospital, the Beatrix School, a church and a shelter for the homeless. In 2018 his beatification process began. The museum shows his memorabilia, including his Bible and everyday objects, an imitation ashram and a reconstruction of a classroom from the Beatrix School. The second part of the exhibition is devoted to Fr. Prof. Piotr Nawrot SVD, a researcher of the music of the missionary Baroque in South America.
