About the museum
The Polar Research Museum in Puławy (Muzeum Badań Polarnych w Puławach) was established in May 2020. Since 25 June 2021 it has been run jointly by the Lublin Voivodeship self-government and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Visitors have been able to enter the museum since 2023, and the official opening of the permanent exhibition took place on 21 February 2024.
The museum is located in a building at ul. 4 Pułku Piechoty WP, which also houses an off-site faculty of UMCS. The museum popularises knowledge of Polish polar research, which has been carried out since the 19th century.
The permanent exhibition shows original equipment of polar explorers and expedition gear, including the Mi-2 helicopter “Jan”, Nansen sledges, a snowmobile, clothing and skis. Natural history collections are also on display, such as rocks, whale bones and a musk ox, as well as a reconstruction of the Polish Antarctic Station named after Antoni Bolesław Dobrowolski, built from original objects brought back from Bunger Oasis. The narrative is supplemented by films and multimedia presentations.
