About the museum

The Temple of the Sibyl was built in 1798–1801 in the palace park at Puławy, on a steep slope above the Vistula. The designer was Piotr Aigner, and the model for the rotunda was the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli near Rome. Broad stairs lead up to the upper hall; they are decorated with stone lions given by Tsar Alexander I after his visit in 1805.

The building served as a memorial museum founded by Princess Izabela Czartoryska. She gathered in it relics of the Sieniawski, Lubomirski and Czartoryski families and objects connected with figures from Polish history and culture, in order to preserve national memory after the partitions. In 1830 the collections were taken to Paris and then to Kraków, where they became the basis of the Czartoryski Museum.

The museum in the Temple of the Sibyl was revived in 1938. Today the building belongs to the park complex of the Czartoryski Museum in Puławy and presents panel exhibitions devoted, among others, to Izabela Czartoryska. It is listed as a historic monument.
